Fukoji Temple: Acala Triad
JAPAN, Oita, Bungoono; Kamakura period (1185–1333); Stone; H: 11.3 m (Acala)
This late Kamakura period carving of the Acala Triad is located to the left of two large caves on a cliff across a valley at the back of Fukoji Temple. It is cut in relief about 20 m above the ground. The carving is listed as a Prefectural Historic Site. The central figure, the Wisdom King Acala, is attended by Kinkara and Cetaka. The king has a braid falling over the left shoulder and is depicted with a wrathful expression. A sword is carried over the right shoulder, and the left hand was once holding a noose. The robust body is engulfed in painted flames. The two attendants, each 9 m in height, stand on either side. The carving is assumed to have been done by local sculptors. The style is simple and the finish is smooth. |
