Avalokitesvara in a White Robe

CHINA; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368); By Jueji Yongzhong; Hanging scroll; Ink on paper; 78.7 x 31.7 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio, USA
This painting shows Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sitting in contemplation. The Bodhisattva has an urna between the eyebrows and a nimbus around the head. On the forehead, a fringe of hair is visible under the hood that appears to be draped over a tall headdress. The robe is simply depicted with sweeping curved lines. There is an inscription in seal script in the lower left corner attributing the work to Jueji Yongzhong. In the middle of the upper register, there is a commendation written by Chan Master Zhongfeng Mingben during the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368).
