Mogao Cave 14: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This Late Tang period (846–907) image is located on the south wall of the main chamber. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva wears a three-pointed headdress and has a round face, fine eyes, and long earlobes. The Bodhisattva wears ornaments and has broad shoulders and a slender waist. A diaphanous stole is draped over the left shoulder and winds around the arms. The hands form the dhyana (meditation) mudra, and the figure sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne. Twin dragons appear above the nimbus that surrounds the Bodhisattva’s head.
