Shuilu Temple Water and Land Hall: Five Hundred Arhats Crossing the Sea
CHINA, Shaanxi, Xi'an; Ming dynasty (1368–1644), dated 1563
These figures are located on the lower section of the north and south walls of the temple. The Five Hundred Arhats are dynamically arranged in a strip along walls crowded with other subjects. The Arhats are grouped in small boats in the marine scene pictured here. Dragons and other mythical creatures, along with dwarves and the two guardians of the underworld, Ox-Head and Horse-Face accompany them among the waves. The Arhats are a calm contrast amid the swirling activity. |
