Mogao Cave 172: Apsaras

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
These two apsaras are painted within the niche on the back (west) wall of the main chamber. The apsara on the left dives through the air in a graceful arch, while the apsara on the right flies upward with hands placed behind the head. Their trailing stoles and garments emphasize their rapid flight. Both apsaras have high topknots and bare upper bodies. Their movements appear fluid and carefree as they fly among the floating clouds.
