This painting was originally found on the back (east) wall of the main chamber in Cave 38. It depicts the Defeat of Mara and Enlightenment, which extend to the upper sections of the side walls.
The scene depicts Mara’s army attempting to assault the Buddha as he seeks enlightenment through meditation. Mara’s soldiers appear ferocious and angry, with piercing eyes and long fangs. Many hold lances or swords and have long horns, while others carry flaming jewels on their heads and cast stones. Some of the figures appear to be spitting flames. Four of the demons hold a rectangular board engulfed in flames. The mural has a white background and the colors are painted directly onto the wall, with very few traces of sketch lines. |
