CHINA, Hebei, Shijiazhuang; Jin dynasty (1115–1234), dated 1210; Earthenware; H: 78 cm; Zhengding County Administration Office of Cultural Heritage, Hebei, China
This hexagonal double-eave pagoda was excavated from Youju Temple in 1976. It is 78 cm high and 30.5 cm wide, and was built in imitation of a wooden pagoda. The body stands on a hexagonal Sumeru base, and there are double doors on the front face with an inscription above dating the pagoda to 1210. The eaves are supported by bracket sets and there is a steep pyramidal roof. The corners of the eaves turn upward and are decorated with mythical animals. The spire consists of an upright lotus, round harmika, vase, and jeweled finial. The whole pagoda is coated in green, yellow, and brown glaze, producing a colorful and bright work of tri-color pottery.
