Bodhgaya: Donation of the Jetavana Monastery
INDIA, Bihar, Bodhgaya; circa 1st century BCE; Sandstone; H: 35 cm; Archaeological Museum, Bodhgaya, Bihar, India
This relief once adorned a pillar that belonged to railings surrounding the Mahabodhi Temple, which was constructed during the Sunga period (circa 185-75 BCE). It depicts the story of Anathapindada purchasing Jetavana Grove by the amount of gold it took to cover the ground. One figure transports the gold in a basket, while the other two are busy laying the gold on the ground. Although the reliefs found at the temple are simplified and most have severe weathering, they are nevertheless historically important. |
