Cheongnyangsa Temple: Sakyamuni Buddha

The Buddha sits on a rectangular throne with the right hand in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The throne is supported on a rectangular base with lotuses carved on its inset panels. A reverse lotus at the top gives way to a stepped support for the middle portion, on which are carved reliefs of Eight Classes of Dharma Protectors with two on each side. The base upon which the Buddha sits is typical of 9th century Buddha sculptures.
The mandorla behind the Buddha has flying apsaras among the flames, and a seated Buddha image at its apex. The statue was listed as Treasure No. 265 in 1963. |
