Bhaja Cave 18: Figures Riding a Horse Chariot and an Elephant
INDIA, Maharashtra, Pune; circa 2nd century-1st century BCE
Located on the south wall of the portico of Cave 18, the left relief depicts a four-horse chariot with a figure holding the reins. The richly dressed driver is thought by some to be Surya. Attendants on either side hold a whisk and canopy, and the chariot rolls over a giant. The figures all wear elaborate jewelry and have tall coiffures. The wheels of the chariot and the tightly grouped horses are intricately carved. The three figures within the cart face outward, while the chariot and horses are portrayed in profile. On the right, a figure rides an elephant who has apparently uprooted a tree. The figure is sometimes identified as Sakra. |
