Tuokuzisalai Hall I: Head of a Dharma Protector
CHINA, Xinjiang, Kashgar; 4th–5th century; Clay; H: 20 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
Although the Dharma protector has demonic features such as upward protruding fangs and knotted eyebrows, other aspects of the head have a more pleasing appearance. The curled hair and extended earlobes, for example, are signs of a spiritually great person. The work 's most indentifying feature is the lion 's head on top of the head, which reflects Hellenic-influenced models in Gandharan art. |
