Yungang Grotto 7: Ceiling

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone
The ceiling of the rear chamber is divided into six sections, each featuring a lotus surrounded by apsaras. The raised imitation beams between each section also feature apsaras, with lotuses carved at the junctions. The apsaras are depicted in graceful, dynamic poses, wearing crowns, long gowns, and draped stoles. The nimbuses behind their heads are painted in a variety of colors. Some of the apsaras hold objects such as a lotus bud or jewel, while others join palms.
