Wutaishan Xiantong Temple: Statuette of Master Daoji
CHINA, Shanxi, Xinzhou; Qing dynasty (1644–1911);Earthenware; H: 65 cm
Chan Master Daoji was a monk of the Yangqi branch of the Linji school of Buddhism during the Song dynasty (960-1279). He was tonsured at age 18 at Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou. Also known as Ji Gong, he was renowned for his uninhibited character and unrestrained behavior.
Master Daoji is depicted wearing a ragged cap and glancing upward. He reveals his teeth while laughing heartily, and his chest is bare with his ribs clearly visible. He wears a blue robe with a number of light-colored patches, and chanting beads are strung around his neck. Walking barefoot, Master Daoji carries his monastic shoes in his left hand, and holds a fan in his right.
This work of art brilliantly captures Master Daoji's character and demeanor. |
