Pingliang: Seated Buddha
CHINA, Gansu, Pingliang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Gilt bronze; H: 18.6 cm; Gansu Provincial Museum, Lanzhou, China
The Buddha sits cross-legged on a high Sumeru throne wearing monastic robes that leave the right shoulder bared. The right hand is raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra while the left opens across the knee in varada (wish-granting) mudra. An intersecting aureole and nimbus with a foliated inner rim surrounded by flames are behind the figure. |
