Wanfo Pagoda: Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva

CHINA, Zhejiang, Jinhua; Northern Song dynasty (960–1127), dated 1056–1063; Commissioned by Wu Erniang; Gilt bronze; H: 45.5 cm; Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Hangzhou, China
The statue was excavated in 1956. Ksitigarbha takes the form of a monk seated in the relaxation posture. A hollow nimbus that is imaginatively formed frames the head and also extends the shape into a flame pattern. The figure wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders but reveals the inner robe beneath. The right hand is in lotus mudra, while the left hand holds a jewel. The artwork is reminiscent of the southern China during the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127). An inscription along the base identifies Wu Erniang as the person who commissioned this artwork.
