Longmen Grotto 1955: Warriors

CHINA, Henan, Luoyang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Stone; H: 2.1 m
Situated on both sides of the grotto entrance, these warriors have suffered severe damage. Both figures have bare upper bodies and wear short dhoti, which are tied with a sash at the waist. With the body slightly inclined to one side, the warrior on the right holds a representation of Mount Sumeru in his hand. The body of the warrior on the left is slightly inclined towards one side. The warrior steps forward with one foot, which is symmetrical to the warrior on the right. The warriors’ distinct and vivid muscular physiques create an impression of kinetic strength. The high relief carving skill of the artist yields the visual impression that the warriors emerge from the wall.
