Meishan Xianrendong Rock Carvings Niche 7: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Sichuan, Meishan; Tang dynasty (618–907); Stone; H: 1.8 m
This statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is located against the back wall of a domed niche, which measures 1.2 m wide and 2 m high. The Bodhisattva has a petal-shaped nimbus, which is ornamented with a ring of beads. The hair is tied in a topknot topped with a floral headdress, with ribbons that trail down to the shoulders. The face is round with slender eyebrows and a gentle and tranquil countenance. The robes are worn across the shoulders and the figure is adorned with a necklace and string bead ornament around the abdomen. A stole is draped across the Bodhisattva’s arms, which hangs down alongside the long lower garment. The Bodhisattva’s left hand is raised above the shoulder and holds a willow branch, while the right hand is lowered, holding a vase. The Bodhisattva leans slightly to one side and appears graceful.
