Yungang Grotto 6: Bodhisattvas in Contemplation

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone
These Bodhisattvas are carved within trapezoidal niches on the side walls of the window on the front (south) wall. Both Bodhisattvas sit in relaxation postures with one arm raised to shoulder level. They wear similar headdresses, necklaces, stoles, and armlets. Behind each Bodhisattva 's head is a large plain nimbus surrounded by carvings of heavenly beings and mountain peaks. The lintels of both niches are sculpted to resemble draped curtains, and carved above these are heavenly beings and monks with joined palms. In front of the niche on the west wall, the horse kneeling on all fours is thought to represent Prince Siddartha 's white horse, Kanthaka, who was unwilling to part with the prince when he renounced.
