Statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Porcelain; H: 18.7 cm; Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, USA
Avalokitesvara is depicted with a round face, downcast eyes, a long nose, large ears, and a narrow mouth. There is a heavy necklace on the bare chest, and a hooded robe fits over the hair and flows down over the body. The thick folds of the robe are a prominent feature. The Bodhisattva sits in royal ease posture with the right hand resting on the right knee. The white porcelain has a smooth texture and a mellow luster, which highlights the elegance and purity of Avalokitesvara.
