Medicine Buddha

The Buddha’s features are simplified and set high in an oval face, below which is the neck with its three lines that signify a great person. The right hand is in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra while the left holds the medicine bowl that identifies the Medicine Buddha. The monastic robe covers both shoulders and is secured by a knot below the left. The material descends in raised ripples to the skirt below and deeper folds are formed where it falls over the two wrists. The figure stands on a double lotus pedestal where individual petals are ornamented with flowers, as are the faces of its openwork octagonal base. |
