Avalokitesvara with a Fish Basket

CHINA; Yuan dynasty (1271-1368); Ink on paper; 70.3 x 27.7 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is clad in a long robe secured with a sash around the waist. The right hand holds a bamboo basket and the left hand carries a long-handled strainer. Smudged ink is used to portray the hair of the Bodhisattva. The figure is concisely painted with brisk brushstrokes, emphasizing the expression of Chan over artistry and ornamentation. This style of painting was popular in Jiangnan (region south of the Yangtze River) between the late Song dynasty (960-1279) and early Yuan dynasty.
