Palcho Monastery Murals

CHINA, Tibet, Gyantse; 14th–17th century
Palcho Monastery was built in the 15th century and includes the central hall and the Kumbum Stupa. The murals within the three-story central hall are a mixture of illustrations of stories from the Life of the Buddha and the Jataka tales, as well as images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dharma protectors, and mahasiddhas. Along the corridors of the second story, the individual scenes are separated by images of buildings, plants, and flowers. One mural depicts the lifestyle of Tibetan herdsmen, who sit together while their horses feed on grass.
