Hoejeon

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392)
Hoejeon was the renowned painter of the Korean Buddhist painting Illustration of the Sutra on the Descent of Maitreya. In the year 1350 during the Goryeo dynasty, monk Hyeoncheol led over 20 benefactors to initiate the painting of this illustration, which was completed by Hoejeon. The painting depicts Maitreya Buddha, flanked by two Bodhisattvas, all seated with legs pendent; this particular feature is rarely seen in Korean Buddhist art. At the bottom left corner is an inscription by Hoejeon, written in gold characters. The painting is now kept at the Gobojakujoin Temple in Wakayama, Japan.
