Nyentok Monastery: Tsongkhapa
CHINA, Qinghai, Rebkong; Qing dynasty (1644–1911), dated 1662–1722; 295 x 240 cm
This mural depicts Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, who came to be regarded as a manifestation of Manjusri Bodhisattva. His important works include the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, as well as the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Hidden Path.
Tsongkhapa sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne, wearing a yellow hat and robe. Both hands form the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra while holding lotuses that support a sword and a scripture, symbols of Manjusri. Tsongkhapa is flanked by two small disciples. Mountains, trees, temples, palaces, and monks fill the background. |
