Baoqing Temple: Bodhisattva in Contemplation

CHINA, Shaanxi, Xi'an; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Marble; H: 62.6 cm; Eisei Bunko Museum, Tokyo, Japan
The Bodhisattva sits in the relaxation posture and although the right arm is missing, it likely formed the contemplation gesture. The figure has a square face, large eyes, a wide nose, and narrow lips. A shawl, necklace and headdress adorn the Bodhisattva. The left foot rests on a lotus pedestal, and the garment folds cascade downwards in a stylized fashion. Shaped like a lotus petal, the mandorla is undecorated. Some pigment still remains and is visible on parts of the statue.
