Langru: Heavenly Being

CHINA, Xinjiang, Hotan; circa 6th century; Clay; H: 12 cm; Hotan Cultural Museum, Xinjiang, China
This artifact was discovered at the site of a Buddhist temple of which only the foundations remain. It likely served as a decorative motif on a wall or as part of a larger work.
The heavenly being emerges from the center of a lotus, holding a large garland aloft. The figure has a high circular topknot, behind which there is a tilted two-layer nimbus. Downward swirls suggest the folds of a dress over the shoulders, chest, ribs, and stomach. The artifact is mostly plain with a reddish color on the top of the lotus petal to the right.
