Norbugang Monastery: Aksobhya Buddha

BHUTAN, Punakha; 18th century; Silver alloy; H: 22 cm
Aksobhya Buddha wears a five-leaf crown studded with turquoises, like his other pieces of jewelry. The openwork nimbus and aureole intersecting behind the figure are decorated with a flame-patterned rim. The gilding contrasts strongly with the silver alloy.
The figure sits in full lotus position with the right hand in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The vajra held in the left hand identifies him as Aksobhya. The lotus throne is decorated in Bhutanese style with lobed petals. It rests on an engraved platform depicting a warrior holding a sword and shield in the center, and two elephants on each side.
