Kizil Cave 123: Bodhisattva in Contemplation
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 7th century; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
This mural was located above the entrance to the right corridor in the main chamber, opposite another Bodhisattva in contemplation which is above the left corridor’s entrance. In the mural, a seated Bodhisattva is depicted with the left hand on the waist and the right hand under the chin in contemplation. The Bodhisattva is clad in jewels and has a flowing stole and a nimbus. A peacock in front of the Bodhisattva catches a snake in its beak, and the snake, in turn, is swallowing a frog. |
