Arhat

CHINA; Jin dynasty (1115–1234), dated 1158; Commissioned by Lady Wang–Shi; Marble; H: 91.4 cm; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
The eyes of the Arhat in this sculpture are looking down as he sits beneath a tree in the royal ease posture. The figure wears a monastic robe fastened with a buckle on the left shoulder. The robe has dense, flowing folds and the hem covers the rocky pedestal. The Arhat pats a tiger cub that leans against his knee while he holds out his other hand towards the animal. An inscription is engraved on the branch above the figure, stating the sculpture was completed in 1158.
