Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

The gilded Bodhisattva stands upon a double lotus pedestal and holds a vase in the left hand and a willow branch in the right hand. The crown includes a tutelary Buddha and has several downward hanging ribbons. Long strings of jewelry and twisting stoles drape the length of the body and overlap the pedestal. The lower body is covered by a thin skirt that allows the outline of the legs to show through. The nimbus is in openwork with vine-like designs in the center and a fiery outer rim. The nimbus and the square stand were made separately then joined to the statue by the mortise and tenon technique. |
