Avalokitesvara and a Child

CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644-1911), 1803; By Jin Liying; Ink and color on paper; 111.6 x 44.1 cm; Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Hangzhou, China
The inscription on the left side of this painting states that it was created in 1803, and is the 22nd image of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva made by Jin Liying. Part of the Surangama Sutra is written in the upper right corner. Avalokitesvara is dressed in white and wears a headdress decorated with a Buddha image. The Bodhisattva sits gracefully on the back of a lion, gazing down with a hint of a smile at a small child who bows in reverence. The white parrot and the base of the tall stand indicate a new feature and painting style in Buddhist paintings of mid-Qing dynasty.
