Tuokuzisalai Hall I: Head of a Bodhisattva

This is another fragment from a mural, with the face produced by the use of a mold. The hair has been added high on the head, giving a broad brow. It has been carefully arranged to give the impression of hair that has been braided and wound into a neat circular topknot. The ears have not been applied directly onto the hair unlike other examples. The clay has instead been hollowed to insert the ears for a more natural effect. The head is positioned to show a frontal view of the face with lips slightly parted in a smile that shows the teeth. |
