Buddha Triad

KOREA; Baekje period (18 BCE–663); Gilt bronze; Tokyo National Museum, Japan
The robed Buddha stands at the center with the right hand in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra and the left hand pointing downwards. A lotus nimbus frames the figure's head, which in turn is surrounded by five seated Buddhas, all linked by foliage. The Bodhisattvas stand on inverted lotus pedestals on either side of the Buddha with their hands concealed in their sleeves. They have flaming Dharma wheel nimbuses. The whole composition is within a flaming mandorla.
