AFGHANISTAN, Kabul; circa 1st century; Gold; H: 5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This reliquary stupa was made using hammering technique. It is 5 cm high and 3.8 cm in diameter. It consists of a base, body, and spire, all of which are detachable. The ridged base has a hollow space inside, and the body consists of a plain lower section bordered by ridges and an upper section in the shape of an inverted bowl. The upper half of the bowl is decorated with a beaded leaf pattern, but some of the small beads have fallen off. The spire consists of a harmika in the form of an inverted three-step pyramid and three stacked rings.
