Brick with Seated Buddhas
KOREA; Unified Silla dynasty (668–935); Earthenware; H: 6.3 cm; Gyeongju National Museum, South Korea
This rectangular brick with four seated Buddha images is believed to have been excavated from a temple near Gyeongju. Although the stretcher surface is worn, the robes, nimbuses, and aureoles of each image are still clearly visible. The four Buddhas are separated by three-story pagodas, and the upper part is decorated with auspicious clouds and birds. The design of this brick is reminiscent of Chinese Tang dynasty (618-907) bricks. |
