Ajanta Cave 17: Life of the Buddha - Return to Kapilavastu

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa mid-to-late 5th century
This mural is found on the left side of the back wall in the antechamber and depicts the scene of the Buddha returning to his hometown in Kapilavastu to teach the Dharma. The image illustrates the Buddha meeting his wife and son, Yasodhara and Rahula, at the front gate of the palace. The Buddha is much larger than the other figures and wears a golden robe. He holds an alms bowl in his right hand and inclines his head towards his wife and son. Yasodhara grasps her son and Rahula reaches out to the Buddha.
