CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This detail is found in the lower central section of the illustration of the Amitabha Sutra on the south wall of the main chamber. The heavenly dancer has a high topknot and a full face with curved eyebrows and round cheeks. The figure wears a necklace, bracelets on the arms and wrists, and a long stole wrapped around the arms. The dancer’s right elbow is bent and the hand is raised to ear level while the left hand is lowered and grasps the stole.
