Frontispiece of the Amitabha Sutra

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty (918-1392), dated 1341; Gold on indigo paper; 22 x 17 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This frontispiece of the Amitabha Sutra is spread over two pages. It depicts the Western Pure Land in gold on indigo-dyed paper. The frame is painted with vajra and Dharma wheel patterns. The right half of the painting shows Amitabha Buddha, accompanied by Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattvas, giving teachings to an assembly of Bodhisattvas and disciples. On the left half, two Bodhisattvas guide a deceased being to the Pure Land. The fine golden lines are arranged into intricate patterns, making this a striking artwork.
