Famen Temple Pagoda: Incense Burner

CHINA, Shaanxi, Baoji; Tang dynasty (618–907); Commissioned by Emperor Xizong; Gilt silver; Diameter: 12.8 cm
This spherical incense burner can be opened to reveal two equal hemispheres that are hinged together with a simple lock. The smoke filters through the scroll leaf openwork design. There are circular floral designs on the surface of the sphere, each containing two to four moth images. The rims of the hemispheres are also decorated with a scroll leaf pattern. A chain 24.5 cm long is attached to the top. Inside is a shallow bowl that holds the incense and maintains its horizontal position when the burner is swung.
