Bazhong Rock Carvings Northern Niche 7: Niche Lintel
CHINA, Sichuan, Bazhong; Tang dynasty (618-907)
This lintel is the inner layer of the three layers which encompass Northern Niche 7. It is arch-shaped and carved with reliefs of seven Buddhas and six heavenly musicians. The seven Buddhas are dressed in monastic robes and each surrounded by a mandorla. Each heavenly musician holds a different musical instrument, including a drum, zither, pipa, flute, and cymbals. They are dressed in long skirts and floating stoles, with their upper bodies bare. |
