Mogao Cave 17: Bodhisattva Making an Offering
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 34 x 14 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This painting was discovered in Mogao Cave 17. The Bodhisattva stands on a lotus throne, holding a tray of flowers. A headdress partially covers the topknot. The face has been damaged, leaving only the eyebrows and eyes visible. A colorful, radiating nimbus surrounds the head. The red and blue stole draped around the shoulders flutters down beside the purple dhoti. A beaded ornament covers the chest. Though the painting has faded slightly, the colors are still striking. |
