Ascetic Sakyamuni
Ascetic Sakyamuni

Ascetic Sakyamuni

CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644-1911), dated 1759; By Jin Nong; Ink on paper; 24.4 x 31 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China
This painting is part of Jin Nong's People and Landscape Album. The inscription on the left is dated 1759, when Jin was 73 years old. Sakyamuni, portrayed with long eyebrows and a frail body, sits on a bed of leaves beneath three large trees. Both of his hands are placed on his raised left knee, and his right leg rests on the ground. The faint, free flowing strokes used to depict Sakyamuni emphasize his weakened state after ascetic practice. Varied shades of fine, curving lines make the tree trunks appear rough and twisted.
