Mogao Caves: Head of a Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618); Clay; H: 47 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This head originates in the Mogao Caves. The mounded hair is parted in the center and tied with a fillet. The face is broad and smiling, and the gaze is direct. In contrast to the other strongly modeled features, the eyebrows are simply depicted with curved lines.
