Mogao Cave 148: Illustration of the Amitayurdhyana Sutra - Music and Dance

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This scene is below the central Buddha in the illustration of the Amitayurdhyana Sutra, which is located on the right side of the front (east) wall within the main chamber. Two heavenly beings dance upon a platform before Amitabha Buddha. They wear headdresses, stoles, and long lower garments. The heavenly beings dance with arms and left legs raised, their stoles twirling and twisting about them, emphasizing their graceful movement. One of the dancers faces forward and the other dancer faces back as the two figures move in synchronized, harmonious rapture.
