Gugiri: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, Seoul; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392); Granite; H: 5.94 m
This rock carving is located on a cliff on Bukhansan behind Seunggasa Temple. Carved during the 10th century, the well-preserved figure was listed as Treasure No. 215 in 1963.
The Buddha is seated in full lotus position on a lotus throne. The figure is dressed in a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bared. A distinctive canopy protrudes from the rock above the Buddha’s head. The outline of the plain mandorla is engraved from the surrounding rock. Square holes at the top remain from a wooden structure that was intended to create the impression that the Buddha was seated within a cave.
