Piyang Cave 1: Apsaras

CHINA, Tibet, Ngari; circa 11th century
The large mandala murals on the north wall of Cave 1 in Area 1 feature groups of apsaras in the corners. The apsaras wear fitted clothing and flowing stoles, and are depicted holding musical instruments or offerings. In the left group, one figure holds cymbals while the other holds a drum in the left hand and a duster in the right. Three apsaras, all wearing tall crowns, fill the space on the right side. They hold objects such as a drum, a canopy, and a trumpet. The figures are highly decorated and assume various postures. They are painted against a blue background and appear colorful and light.
