Kofukuji Temple: Bell

JAPAN, Nara; Nara period (710–794), dated 727; Bronze; H: 149 cm
Regarded as the second oldest dating from the Nara period (710-794), this bell was listed as a National Treasure in 1952 and is currently kept in the National Treasure Museum at Kofukuji Temple.
  The bell is 149 cm high with a diameter of 90.3 cm at the mouth, and it is 8.8 cm thick. Its crown is in the form of twin dragons decorated with a flame pattern. There are four panels of studs around the upper part of the bell. The rest of the waist is divided into eight plain panels by embossed lines. The raised boss is located where the vertical and horizontal lines meet. There are three plain rings around the sound rim.
