This wooden sculpture from the Ming dynasty depicts an Arhat seated in a dynamic variation of the relaxation posture with the left leg supported above the right knee, giving the body a distinct twist to one side. The rhythmic folds of the monastic robe pull in different directions adding to the tension. The moment of enlightenment has been made into a scene of high drama. It is further heightened by the way the right arm is thrown back and how the left hand clutches the stole that has slipped from the shoulder. The slightly opened mouth heightens the drama, and the wide stare of the eyes looking upwards gives an inward quality by being turned away from the viewer. |
