Mogao Cave 17: Servant

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
Located on the back (north) wall to the left of the statue of Master Hongbian, this mural depicts a female servant standing beneath a tree. The woman has a round face and her hair is arranged in two topknots. Her eyes gaze forward in a serious and respectful manner. She wears a long gown with a round collar and a sash around the waist. The figure raises her left hand and holds a long staff in her right. Although the outline of the woman is simple, a three-dimensional treatment is applied to the garments and tree to express texture. The leaves of the tree are painted in alternating light and dark green, further emphasizing a sense of three-dimensional space.
