Palcho Monastery Kumbum Stupa Wish Fulfilling Shrine: Rinchen Zangpo

CHINA, Tibet, Gyantse; 14th–17th century; Clay; H: 90 cm
This Palcho Monastery statue depicts the famous translator and eminent monk, Rinchen Zangpo. He was sent to study in India at an early age by the ruler of the Guge Kingdom in western Tibet and afterwards contributed greatly to the renewal and development of Tibetan Buddhism. He is shown wearing a red lama's hat and a maroon monastic robe and under-tunic. Seated in full lotus position on a throne with cloud patterns, the figure's raised right hand forms the vitarka (teaching) mudra while the left hand is held palm outwards over the knee in varada (wish-granting) mudra.
